As each new year emerges, I reflect on the year before and beat myself up about what didn’t work out. That someone might be a younger version of you, begging for a chance to share their insight. Instead of excitement, I often just feel relieved that the urge to do something meaningful is temporarily muted. Right now, that tween is my wisest teacher, whose first lesson was a simple demand that I try to respect myself again. I’ve been held hostage by self-loathing and perfectionism in recent years, but thanks to my inner tween, next year’s resolutions are all about liberation.
Kit Connor, the star of Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” came out as bisexual Monday in a tweet. Fans speculated that the post was penned in response to accusations of queerbaiting. Accusations of celebrity queerbaiting operate from a specific definition of how to be queer and how to be queer in public, creating conditional standards of acceptability. Internet users scrutinize lyrics, performances and social media posts or stalk the personal lives of celebrities to determine whether they’re queerbaiting their fans. This kind of pressure is just as problematic as the queerphobic prodding and harassment LGBTQ people receive from those outside the queer community.
When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis this summer, actor Selma Blair seemed to greet me. For a while, I worried that my feelings were spiteful or mean, but my visceral reaction wasn’t about her. For a while, I worried that my feelings were spiteful or mean, but my visceral reaction wasn’t about her. This might have been a very intentional and personal choice — but it reminded me of problematic stereotypes that pressure disabled people to conform to ableist standards. What’s possible for Selma Blair just isn’t possible for some others.
A New York City congressional candidate uploaded his sex tape to PornHub earlier this year, but it made headlines last week. Mike Itkis, an independent whose campaign highlights a "sex positive approach" to domestic policy, reportedly released the tape in part to show support for sex workers. Voters who want to support sex workers should learn more about the legislation affecting this and other vulnerable groups — especially those living at the intersection of multiple marginalized experiences (such as migrant or trans sex workers). When considering candidates, ask pointed questions about plans to develop new policies that support sex workers and amend the laws that don’t. I hope Itkis enjoyed making his sex tape — but he needs to prioritize listening to the sex workers in his constituency now that he’s done.
